art party 2015

Sosias invitation:

The number of year-end albums and songs lists created is mind-boggling.  It is not my opinion that any of you need to know my top 20ish songs of the year, or that this will have any effect on your life whatsoever aside from one night of your life.  But this -- the 9th anniversary of the annual Top Songs of the Year Listening & Art Party-- is a bit more than just a countdown.  Here's how it works:

1. I have compiled my top songs of the year into a little mix. I've taken out most things too heavyheavy or played out.  The songs have been carefully culled from several 2014 lists, friends' lists, and my own experience.

2. What you do: RSVP and I will assign each person a song for which they are to create "an artistic representation."  The wording is intentionally vague.  I've seen creations ranging from figures embedded in plastic, to watercolor drawings, to a hand-drawn comic, to a kitchen ladle with the name of a Spoon song written on it, to an interpretive dance, to a diorama, to a flower planted outside in the snow (that was me last year), or it could also be a photo, poem, story, chordal noise you make with your voicebox, you name it.
The timing is also intentionally short.  You don't have time to dwell too much on it or fret and you may have to use what is at your immediate disposal.  Everyone has the same amount of time and what you do with your song is up to you.  You love a deadline.
3. We gather, eat, drink, and listen to the songs in ascending order and when your song comes on, you display your art.

4. We probably get drunk in the process.

PS - History of the Art Party:

A wonderful and varied group of friends in San Francisco have been putting on this party almost every year and this is the second time I'll be experimenting with it in NYC. It's been one of the more interesting and creatively unusual experiences with friends that I've had.  It is what all of us make of it.  It's an experiment!

And just as last year, it was amazing.
